For the past three years I’ve created one-of-a-kind trophies for the Better Housing Coalition‘s Groundbreaker event, which honors four people for their contributions to the community. This year the event took place on the site of an old woodworking factory that is being transformed into mixed-use affordable housing. At the request of the organizers I dug through the materials that were still on the site to create these awards. I found an old box of wood veneer samples and decided to use stacks of them to represent the diversity of the communities which are being served by the organization. Each award has a laser-cut icon to represent the work of the individual being honored and a base made from wood that was also found on the premises and finished with water-based varnish. The bases are just held together with two standard bolts from the hardware store.
