At dinner with a friend recently, the subject of writers’ Web sites came up, and this friend mentioned Jennifer Egan’s Web site, which she said was “incredible” or “amazing” or some such superlative. As this friend is not the sort to indulge in reckless superlative tossing, I went home and, as soon as I had a spare moment, looked up Egan’s site. That “moment” turned into at least an hour.The site isn’t your standard author-Web-site fare. Yes, there are the usual pages cataloging books, interviews, other writings, reviews. There are several examples of the “standard ‘grinning mug,’” as Egan herself describes her author photos. But these requisites are handled discreetly.
